Background:

Falls among older adults lead to significant health decline and healthcare costs.
In 2009, 25.6% of older adults in New South Wales fell, with 10.7% requiring hospitalization.
Pharmacists are accessible healthcare professionals with a key role in fall prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of continuing professional development (CPD) on pharmacists' knowledge, confidence, and practice regarding fall prevention.
To evaluate the implementation of fall prevention health promotion plans (FPHPP) and interventions in community pharmacies.

Main Methods:

A continuing professional development (CPD) program on fall prevention was offered to 76 pharmacies.
Pharmacists completed baseline and post-workshop questionnaires, and logs of client interventions.
A four-month follow-up assessed the implementation of FPHPPs and practice changes.

Main Results:

Pharmacists from 36% of pharmacies participated in the CPD.
At four-month follow-up, 67% of participating pharmacists had implemented FPHPPs.
62% of pharmacists delivered brief fall prevention interventions based on client fall risk.

Conclusions:

Locally provided, tailored CPD can enhance pharmacists' role in fall prevention.
This model of pharmacist-led fall prevention is transferable to other settings serving older adults.
Professional development programs can effectively improve health promotion delivery by pharmacists.
