Summary

Mid-dermal elastolysis is a rare skin condition causing skin laxity due to damage to dermal elastin fibers. This case study highlights the successful use of mycophenolate mofetil as a novel treatment for this condition.

Background:

  • Mid-dermal elastolysis is an acquired condition characterized by the fragmentation and loss of elastic fibers in the mid-dermis.
  • This results in significant skin laxity and is often associated with other connective tissue abnormalities.

Observation:

  • A case of mid-dermal elastolysis presenting with characteristic skin laxity was observed.
  • Standard treatments for elastolytic disorders had previously proven ineffective.

Findings:

  • The patient received a novel treatment regimen involving mycophenolate mofetil.
  • Significant improvement in skin laxity and histological evidence of reduced elastolysis were noted following treatment.

Implications:

  • Mycophenolate mofetil represents a potential new therapeutic option for mid-dermal elastolysis.
  • This finding may guide future treatment strategies for patients with this challenging condition.
