Background:

  • B cell activation is a complex process involving multiple cell surface receptors.
  • Complement receptors, specifically CR1 and CR2, are implicated in B cell function, but their precise roles require biochemical elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the biochemical evidence for the involvement of complement receptors 1 (CR1) and 2 (CR2) in B cell activation.
  • To determine if CR1 or CR2 can modulate the calcium signaling response induced by cross-linking membrane immunoglobulin M (IgM).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized flow cytometry with the calcium indicator indo-1 to measure intracellular calcium concentrations (Cai) in tonsillar cells.
  • Stimulated B cells by cross-linking anti-IgM (DA4.4), anti-CR1 (Yz-1), or anti-CR2 (HB5) antibodies.
