Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of feasibility studies funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) programme.
  • To determine the publication rates, subsequent funding applications, and timeframes associated with these feasibility studies.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 120 NIHR RfPB-funded feasibility studies closed by May 2016.
  • Questionnaire survey sent to Principal Investigators (PIs) of identified studies, with 89 usable responses.

Main Results:

  • Of 89 analyzed studies, 57 were deemed feasible, 20 not feasible, and 12 uncertain.
  • £19.5m was spent on the 89 feasibility studies; 16 led to further trials funded at £16.8m.
  • Not feasible studies potentially saved ~£20m in avoided unsuccessful trial costs. Average feasibility study duration: 31 months; average full trial: 42 months.
  • Significant time delays (average 10 months between feasibility and application, 18 months between application and trial start) were observed.
  • Approximately 58% of feasibility studies had published findings, with others in the process.

Conclusions:

  • Feasibility studies demonstrate potential for waste reduction and de-risking of larger clinical trial investments.
  • The current research pathway involves considerable time delays, leading to potential inefficiencies and waste.
  • Optimizing the transition from feasibility to full trial is crucial for maximizing the benefits of early-stage research.
