Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Surgical sterilization (spaying/neutering) is the predominant method for canine and feline reproductive management in North America and globally.
There is increasing demand for non-surgical and reversible alternatives to traditional sterilization procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

To review currently available reversible contraception methods for dogs and cats.
To outline potential side effects associated with these reversible contraception methods.

Main Methods:

Literature review of scientific publications and product information.
Categorization of reversible contraception methods into synthetic steroid hormones, peptide hormone agonists, vaccines, and barrier methods.

Main Results:

Several classes of reversible contraception agents are available for veterinary use.
Each method category presents unique efficacy profiles and potential adverse effects that require careful consideration.

Conclusions:

Reversible contraception offers a viable alternative to surgical sterilization for canine and feline reproductive control.
Further research and clinical data are needed to fully establish the safety and efficacy of various nonsurgical methods.
