Openness to the Future (OFS) is a new, valid scale measuring positive future outlook. This brief measure aids in understanding mental health by assessing protective factors for clinical and community samples.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Mental Health Research
- Psychopathology
Background:
- Traditional psychopathology research often overlooks protective factors and transversal processes crucial for adapted functioning.
- A positive future outlook is increasingly recognized as a vital component of wellbeing and a prospective protective factor for mental health, particularly in emotional disorders.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a new scale for measuring Openness to the Future (OFS).
- To assess the psychometric properties of the OFS in both clinical and community populations.
Main Methods:
- Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Item Response Theory (IRT) were employed to analyze the psychometric properties of the OFS.
- Convergent and discriminant validity were established by correlating the OFS with related psychological constructs.
Main Results:
- The Openness to the Future scale demonstrated a robust unidimensional structure.
- Item functioning was consistent across clinical and community samples, indicating good convergent and discriminant validity.
Conclusions:
- The Openness to the Future scale is a brief, valid, and reliable instrument for assessing attitudes towards the future.
- The OFS can be utilized in both clinical and community settings to identify prospective and protective factors relevant to psychopathology.
