Creative insight involves "Aha!" moments, often linked to specific brain networks. This study used MRI and cognitive tests to map brain structure and function related to creative problem-solving abilities.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Psychology
- Neuroimaging
Background:
- Creative insight, characterized by the
- Aha!
- experience, is crucial for solving complex problems.
- Understanding the neural underpinnings of creative insight is essential for cognitive science.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the large-scale brain networks associated with individual differences in creative insight problem-solving.
- To identify the relationship between brain structure (grey matter volume) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and insight abilities.
Main Methods:
- Recruited 232 healthy adults (aged 21-69) who underwent structural and resting-state functional MRI (fMRI).
- Participants completed an insight test battery (ITB) assessing problem-solving skills.
- Employed voxel-based morphometry (VBM)-constrained RSFC analysis to link brain structure and function to insight scores.
Main Results:
- Positive correlations found between insight scores and grey matter volume (GMV) in the right insula and middle cingulate cortex/precuneus.
- Negative correlations observed between insight scores and GMV in the left cerebellum crus 1 and right supplementary motor area.
- Identified insight-specific connections involving motor regions and creative-common connections within the default mode network.
Conclusions:
- Creative insight emerges from the coordinated activity of multiple brain networks, including the default mode, semantic, and cerebro-cerebellar networks.
- Brain structure and functional connectivity patterns are significantly associated with an individual's capacity for creative insight.
