Background:

  • Papillary fibroelastomas are a common type of primary cardiac tumor.
  • Despite rarity, they pose significant risks including stroke and sudden death.
  • Management of cardiac tumors, particularly papillary fibroelastomas, remains a clinical challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical experience with cardiac tumors at our institution.
  • To specifically analyze the characteristics and outcomes of papillary fibroelastoma cases.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case series was conducted from January 2008 to September 2017.
  • Patients undergoing cardiac surgery for cardiac masses or tumors were identified.
  • Pathology reports were reviewed to confirm diagnoses.

Main Results:

  • Out of 59 cardiac tumor surgeries, papillary fibroelastomas accounted for 13.6%.
  • Eight patients with papillary fibroelastomas (mean age 51.5 years) were identified, predominantly affecting the aortic valve.
  • Presentations included stroke (3 patients), syncope (2 patients), and asymptomatic findings (3 patients).

Conclusions:

  • Papillary fibroelastomas are significant due to embolic potential and obstruction risk.
  • Surgical resection is the primary recommended treatment for papillary fibroelastomas.
  • All surgically treated patients remained asymptomatic with no recurrence during follow-up.
