Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

462
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

13.8K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

797
Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Deleterious Substances in Aggregate01:25

Deleterious Substances in Aggregate

571
Deleterious substances in aggregates can be detrimental to the quality and durability of concrete. These substances include organic impurities like loam, which interfere with cement hydration and are usually present in the sand. These prevent a good bond between aggregate and cement paste. Organic impurities can be detected using the colorimetric test, where the darkness of a solution after agitation indicates the level of organic content.
Another type of impurity is clay and fine material that...

Relative Risk01:12

Relative Risk

2.2K
Relative risk (RR) is a statistical measure commonly used in epidemiology to compare the likelihood of a particular event occurring between two groups. This metric is important for evaluating the relationship between exposure to a specific risk factor and the probability of a particular outcome. It plays a crucial role in medical research, public health studies, and risk assessment. Relative risk quantifies how much more (or less) likely an event is to occur in an exposed group compared to an...

Factors Affecting Solubility04:01

Factors Affecting Solubility

37.3K
Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Chȃtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide:

Summary

Overdoses (ODs) are a significant risk for young people with substance use disorders (SUDs). This study found that OD history in youth is linked to multiple SUDs and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Overdoses (ODs) represent a critical public health issue and a leading cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders (SUDs).
  • Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of ODs in this vulnerable population is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of ODs in youth seeking outpatient SUD treatment.
  • To identify demographic and clinical characteristics associated with a history of OD in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of medical records was conducted for 200 patients aged 16-26 years diagnosed with SUD between January 2012 and June 2013.
  • OD was categorized as unintentional (non-suicidal intent) or intentional (suicide attempt).
  • Statistical analyses including t tests, Pearson χ² tests, and Fisher exact tests were used to identify factors associated with OD history.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-nine percent (58/200) of patients reported a history of OD, with 62% of these being unintentional.
  • Youth with two or more SUDs were three times more likely to have a history of OD compared to those with a single SUD (P < .05).
  • Individuals with a history of OD were more likely to be female and have co-occurring alcohol, cocaine, amphetamine, anxiety, depressive, or eating disorders (P < .05).

Conclusions:

  • Treatment-seeking youth with SUD exhibit high rates of OD.
  • A history of OD in this demographic is significantly associated with having multiple substance use disorders and comorbid psychiatric conditions.
