The interval estimate of any variable is known as the prediction interval. It helps decide if a point estimate is dependable.
However, the point estimate is most likely not the exact value of the population parameter, but close to it. After calculating point estimates, we construct interval estimates, called confidence intervals or prediction intervals. This prediction interval comprises a range of values unlike the point estimate and is a better predictor of the observed sample value, y.

Background:

Current research on smoking lapse behavior lacks detailed characterization of critical decision-making moments.
Understanding the immediate factors influencing smoking decisions is crucial for effective cessation interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess how moment-to-moment dynamics of craving relate to decisions to smoke using an experimental analogue for smoking lapse.
To investigate craving and negative affect as time-varying predictors of smoking behavior.

Main Methods:

128 heavy smokers participated in a 50-minute laboratory delay-to-smoking task over two days.
Participants rated craving and negative affect before each smoking choice; randomized to smoking as usual or overnight abstinence.
Discrete-time hazard models analyzed craving and negative affect as predictors of smoking lapse.

Main Results:

Higher craving levels significantly predicted increased risk of smoking.
Incremental increases in craving, and negative affect (session 2), also predicted increased smoking risk.
Smokers who failed overnight abstinence had higher smoking risk than those who succeeded.

Conclusions:

The study extends the smoking lapse paradigm to capture momentary craving changes predicting smoking behavior.
Nuanced evaluation of craving experiences can inform clinical and pharmacological research for smoking cessation.
Findings highlight the importance of real-time craving dynamics in preventing smoking lapse and relapse.
