Summary

Gentamicin-hydrocortisone ear drops may cause allergic contact dermatitis in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media. This sensitivity was linked to poor treatment outcomes.

Background:

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a common condition often treated with topical medications.
Gentamicin-hydrocortisone ear drops are frequently prescribed for CSOM.
Contact sensitivity to topical medications can complicate treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence of contact sensitivity to gentamicin-hydrocortisone ear drops in patients with CSOM.
To determine if contact sensitivity correlates with treatment response.

Main Methods:

Patch testing was performed on ten patients with active CSOM treated with gentamicin-hydrocortisone.
Patients were monitored for clinical response to the ear drops.

Main Results:

Five out of ten patients (50%) showed positive patch test reactions, indicating contact sensitivity.
Patients with positive skin tests demonstrated a failure to respond to gentamicin-hydrocortisone treatment.

Conclusions:

Contact sensitivity to gentamicin-hydrocortisone is a potential issue in CSOM management.
Identifying and managing allergic contact dermatitis is crucial for effective CSOM treatment.
