Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

8.0K
Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in...

Buffer Effectiveness02:19

Buffer Effectiveness

55.5K
Buffer solutions do not have an unlimited capacity to keep the pH relatively constant . Instead, the ability of a buffer solution to resist changes in pH relies on the presence of appreciable amounts of its conjugate weak acid-base pair. When enough strong acid or base is added to substantially lower the concentration of either member of the buffer pair, the buffering action within the solution is compromised.
The buffer capacity is the amount of acid or base that can be added to a given volume...

Scalar Product (Dot Product)01:11

Scalar Product (Dot Product)

27.8K
The scalar multiplication of two vectors is known as the scalar or dot product. As the name indicates, the scalar product of two vectors results in a number, that is, a scalar quantity. Scalar products are used to define work and energy relations. For example, the work that a force (a vector) performs on an object while causing its displacement (a vector) is defined as a scalar product of the force vector with the displacement vector.
The scalar product of two vectors is obtained by multiplying...

Vector Product (Cross Product)01:17

Vector Product (Cross Product)

28.1K
Vector multiplication of two vectors yields a vector product, with the magnitude equal to the product of the individual vectors multiplied by the sine of the angle between both the vectors and the direction perpendicular to both the individual vectors. As there are always two directions perpendicular to a given plane, one on each side, the direction of the vector product is governed by the right-hand thumb rule.
Consider the cross product of two vectors. Imagine rotating the first vector about...

Biological Effects of Radiation02:59

Biological Effects of Radiation

18.1K
All radioactive nuclides emit high-energy particles or electromagnetic waves. When this radiation encounters living cells, it can cause heating, break chemical bonds, or ionize molecules. The most serious biological damage results when these radioactive emissions fragment or ionize molecules. For example, α and β particles emitted from nuclear decay reactions possess much higher energies than ordinary chemical bond energies. When these particles strike and penetrate matter, they...

Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

318
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Summary

Bowman-Birk inhibitor significantly improved muscle strength in mdx mice over 12 weeks. Other soy extracts, including Haelan 951 and isoflavones, did not show similar benefits for muscular dystrophy.

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Nutrition
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Soybean extracts possess antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties.
  • Anecdotal evidence suggests soy products may alleviate symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the therapeutic potential of specific soy components in a mouse model of DMD.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of Bowman-Birk inhibitor and isoflavones in improving muscle function.

Main Methods:

  • Mdx mice were fed diets containing soy-free control, Haelan 951, purified soy isoflavones, Bowman-Birk protease inhibitor, or a combination.
  • Wire hanging ability was assessed every 4 weeks for 12 weeks.

Main Results:

  • Only the diet with Bowman-Birk inhibitor demonstrated significant and sustained improvement in muscle strength.
