  • Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) are prevalent in military and physically active populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively identify predictors of MSKI development in British infantry recruits.
  • Investigate the role of gait biomechanics, aerobic fitness, smoking status, and military selection tests.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 562 male British infantry recruits.
  • Collected data on plantar pressure, aerobic fitness (1.5-mile run time), smoking status, and military selection test variables.
  • Monitored injury data throughout a 26-week training period.

Main Results:

  • MSKI incidence was 41.28% over 26 weeks.
  • Predictors included higher medial plantar pressure, faster time to peak heel rotation, current smoking status, and slower 1.5-mile run times.
