What is a Mode?

The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set.
There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times.

High cesarean section (C/S) rates pose significant public health challenges.
Understanding societal and healthcare provider attitudes towards delivery modes is crucial for policy development.
Cesarean section on demand without medical indication warrants investigation due to its impact on C/S rates.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate attitudes and knowledge regarding delivery modes and C/S on demand among health workers and the general public.
To inform accurate policies aimed at reducing the cesarean section rate in Turkey.
To analyze factors influencing C/S decisions in a large population.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study involving 1,892 reproductive-age female volunteers.
Participants included 589 healthcare workers and the general public.
Data collected via questionnaires on delivery mode preferences and experiences.

Main Results:

The overall cesarean section rate was 45.4%, significantly higher among health workers (51.4%) than the public (28.2%).
Medical indications accounted for 57.7% of C/S in health workers vs. 40.1% in the public.
A notable percentage opted for C/S without medical indication: 20.2% of health workers and 13.9% of the public.

Conclusions:

Turkey faces a high cesarean section rate requiring an urgent action plan.
Obstetricians must guide patients towards informed decisions regarding C/S on demand, balancing patient preference with medical necessity.
Addressing knowledge gaps and attitudes among both healthcare providers and the public is essential for reducing unnecessary cesarean births.
