Emission Spectra02:39

Emission Spectra

76.5K
When solids, liquids, or condensed gases are heated sufficiently, they radiate some of the excess energy as light. Photons produced in this manner have a range of energies, and thereby produce a continuous spectrum in which an unbroken series of wavelengths is present.

Quantum Numbers02:43

Quantum Numbers

52.1K
It is said that the energy of an electron in an atom is quantized; that is, it can be equal only to certain specific values and can jump from one energy level to another but not transition smoothly or stay between these levels.

Spontaneity02:21

Spontaneity

30.1K
A spontaneous process is one that occurs naturally under certain conditions. A nonspontaneous process, on the other hand, will not take place unless it is “driven” by the continual input of energy from an external source. Processes have a natural tendency to occur in one direction under a given set of conditions. Water will naturally flow downhill (spontaneous process), but uphill flow (nonspontaneous process) requires outside intervention such as the use of a pump. Iron exposed to...

The Quantum-Mechanical Model of an Atom02:45

The Quantum-Mechanical Model of an Atom

59.5K
Shortly after de Broglie published his ideas that the electron in a hydrogen atom could be better thought of as being a circular standing wave instead of a particle moving in quantized circular orbits, Erwin Schrödinger extended de Broglie’s work by deriving what is now known as the Schrödinger equation. When Schrödinger applied his equation to hydrogen-like atoms, he was able to reproduce Bohr’s expression for the energy and, thus, the Rydberg formula governing hydrogen spectra.

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy: Radiation and Light Sources

1.3K
Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) relies on the Beer-Lambert law, which requires that the radiation source emits a narrow range of wavelengths to match the absorption characteristics of the analyte atom. The primary criteria for choosing an appropriate radiation source in AAS is to provide a precise and intense emission at specific wavelengths that will allow accurate detection of the analyte.
Two common narrow-range 'line' sources used in AAS are hollow-cathode lamps (HCLs) and...

A Geographic Information System (GIS) combines specialized software and hardware to effectively manage, analyze, and present spatial and related data. GIS software includes critical functionalities such as a user interface for easy navigation, database management tools for handling spatial and attribute data, and data retrieval features for efficient access. Analytical tools transform raw data into insights, while display functions produce maps and reports in various formats for effective...

    Area of Science:

    • Quantum cryptography
    • Optical communication security

    Background:

    • Traditional ciphers face evolving security threats.
    • Quantum cryptography offers enhanced security but requires robust implementations.
    • Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light sources introduce unique noise characteristics.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and demonstrate the first semi-quantum noise randomized cipher using an ASE light source and the Y-00 protocol.
    • To investigate the theoretical security enhancements offered by ASE's intrinsic noise.
    • To optimize system design for improved security and transmission performance.

    Main Methods:

    • Theoretical formulation of Number of Masked Signals (NMS) and Q-factor.
    • Experimental demonstration using a proof-of-principle setup with a balanced photodetector (BPD).
    • Modulation of local light with an M/2-ary running key as an optical threshold signal.

    Main Results:

    • ASE light's self-beating noise significantly enhances security beyond quantum shot noise.
    • Incorporating both shot and beat noise increases security with a larger number of masked signals (NMS).
    • A 128-level Y-00 cipher was successfully realized at 2.5 Gb/s over 100 km fiber.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed semi-quantum cipher based on ASE light is valid and feasible.
    • Experimental results align with theoretical predictions, confirming the scheme's effectiveness.
    • This approach offers a promising direction for enhanced optical communication security.
