Leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer, can spread to the liver without lung metastasis. Regular CT scans are crucial for early detection of hepatic metastases in extremity leiomyosarcoma patients.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant soft tissue sarcoma with a propensity for metastasis.
- Lung metastasis is typical for extremity leiomyosarcomas, but hepatic involvement can occur.
Observation:
- Two cases of extremity leiomyosarcoma are presented, both with initial liver metastasis.
- Neither patient had evidence of lung metastasis at the time of hepatic lesion diagnosis.
Findings:
- Hepatic metastasis from extremity leiomyosarcoma can occur independently of lung metastasis.
- Surgical resection of primary tumors and subsequent hepatic metastases was performed in both cases.
Implications:
- Early detection of hepatic metastasis is vital for patient management.
- Periodic computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest and abdomen are recommended for surveillance.
