Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the IKEA-effect can enhance children's liking and consumption of vegetable snacks.
  • To determine if self-crafting vegetable snacks increases preference in children aged 4-6.

Main Methods:

  • A between-subjects experiment was conducted with 86 children (aged 4-6) at an after-school facility.
  • Children either crafted a peacock using vegetables or non-food items.
  • Post-crafting, children consumed snack vegetables ad libitum and rated liking and pride.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in vegetable consumption or liking were found between groups.
  • Perceived pride in crafting did not mediate the relationship between self-crafting and vegetable intake/liking.

Conclusions:

  • The IKEA-effect was not replicated in young children for vegetable snacks.
  • Self-crafting vegetables did not increase consumption, possibly due to simple exposure effects.
  • Further research is needed to isolate crafting from exposure effects in children's food preferences.
