Summary

Shorter maternity leaves of 12 weeks or less are linked to higher odds of postpartum depression. Ensuring at least 12 weeks of leave may help mitigate these risks for new mothers returning to work.

Background:

  • Postpartum depression (PPD) affects many US mothers.
  • Most employed mothers return to work postpartum.
  • The link between maternity leave duration and PPD is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between maternity leave duration and postpartum depressive symptoms.
  • To explore this relationship in US mothers returning to full-time employment.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 177 mothers in a national survey.
  • Utilized multivariable logistic regression.
  • Examined the association between maternity leave length and PPD symptoms within two weeks of survey completion.

Main Results:

  • Overall, maternity leave duration was not significantly associated with PPD.
  • However, for leaves of 12 weeks or less, each additional week reduced PPD odds (OR, 0.58).
  • Leaves longer than 12 weeks showed no significant association with PPD (OR, 0.97).

Conclusions:

  • Maternity leaves of 12 weeks or less may increase PPD risk.
  • This could be due to balancing work with postpartum recovery.
  • Recommends at least 12 weeks of leave for mothers returning to full-time work.
