Optic neuritis patients show altered brain activity, with functional impairment in the occipital lobe and adaptation in the frontal lobe. Relapsing optic neuritis indicates more severe damage correlated with disease duration.

- rON patients had significantly decreased ALFFs in the right inferior parietal lobule, left posterior cingulate, and precuneus compared to sON patients.
- Disease duration correlated with ALFF in several brain regions, including the middle temporal gyrus, inferior occipital gyrus, lingual gyrus, and inferior parietal lobule.
Conclusions:
- Spontaneous brain activity alterations, including functional impairment and adaptation, are present in both sON and rON.
- Occipital cortex is primarily affected by functional impairment, while the frontal lobe shows functional adaptations.
- Functional damage is more severe in rON patients than in sON patients and is associated with disease duration.
