Monte Carlo simulations accurately determined the dosimetric characteristics of electron beams from the LIAC accelerator. This research enhances the precision of intraoperative radiotherapy beam dosimetry.
Area of Science:
- Medical Physics
- Radiation Oncology
Background:
- Accurate dosimetry of electron beams from dedicated intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) accelerators is challenging.
- Monte Carlo simulations offer a method to improve beam dosimetry accuracy for IORT accelerators.
Purpose of the Study:
- To model the LIAC accelerator head and electron beams using Monte Carlo simulations.
- To analyze the dosimetric characteristics of electron beams across various applicators and energies.
Main Methods:
- The LIAC accelerator head was modeled using the BEAMnrc Monte Carlo simulation system.
- Phase-space files were generated and used as input for DOSXYZnrc and BEAMDP codes for dose calculations.
Main Results:
- Monte Carlo results closely matched experimental measurements.
- Electron beam energy decreased with smaller applicator diameters.
- X-ray contamination increased with larger applicator diameters.
Conclusions:
- The LIAC head and PMMA collimator system produce electron beams with unique dosimetric properties.
- This specialized design is suitable for intraoperative radiotherapy applications.
- Monte Carlo simulations are valuable for characterizing IORT accelerator beams.
