Summary

Fetal hypoxia, or low oxygen, triggers a rise in atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) levels in fetal sheep. This increase in ANF may contribute to the observed reduction in fetal blood volume during hypoxic conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of hypoxia on circulating ANF concentrations in fetal sheep.
  • To correlate changes in ANF with fetal blood volume during hypoxia.

  • Hypoxia was induced in chronically catheterized fetal sheep by tracheal infusion of nitrogen and CO2.
  • Fetal arterial oxygen partial pressure (PO2) and plasma ANF levels were measured.
