Summary

Language development in children with hearing loss varies by additional disabilities. Children with autism, cerebral palsy, or developmental delay showed language score declines, while others improved, highlighting the impact of co-occurring conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze language development patterns in young children with HL and co-occurring ADs.
  • To identify how different types of ADs influence language outcomes at ages 3 and 5.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a population-based cohort of 67 children from the Longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Hearing Impairment study.
  • Assessed language ability using the Preschool Language Scale, Fourth Edition and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Fourth Edition at ages 3 and 5.
  • Employed standard scores for comparison with typically developing children.

Main Results:

  • Overall language scores remained stable across the cohort from age 3 to 5.
  • Significant differences emerged based on AD type: autism, cerebral palsy, and/or developmental delay were associated with declining scores.

  • This information is valuable for estimating language development when formal cognitive assessments are not feasible.
  • Tailoring interventions based on specific ADs may optimize language outcomes for children with hearing loss.
