    • Psychiatry
    • Women's Health

    Background:

    • Menopause is associated with various physical and psychological changes.
    • Depressive symptoms are a common concern during the menopausal transition.
    • Understanding the prevalence and patterns of depression in climacteric women is essential for targeted interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the pattern and severity of depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women.
    • To correlate menopausal symptoms with the presence and intensity of depression.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 128 postmenopausal women (aged 47-65) experiencing climacteric symptoms were assessed.
    • Kupperman Index was used to evaluate climacteric symptom intensity.
    • Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) measured depressive symptom severity.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) was recorded for all participants.
  • Main Results:

    • The average HDRS score was 11 (±7), indicating mild to moderate depression on average.
    • 31.2% of women showed no depressive symptoms.
    • 50% experienced mild depressive symptoms, 29.9% moderate, and 1.3% severe.
    • Most frequent symptoms included anxiety/fear (70.2%), sleep disturbances (68.6%), and general symptoms (68.6%).

    Conclusions:

    • A significant proportion of postmenopausal women experience depressive symptoms, ranging from mild to severe.
    • Anxiety, sleep issues, and general symptoms are prevalent manifestations of depression in this demographic.
    • Further research and clinical attention are warranted for managing depression in climacteric women.
