  • Cannabis is a widely used illicit substance globally.
  • There is a need for effective interventions to address cannabis use and its associated harms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an updated overview of comprehensive interventions for preventing and reducing cannabis use.
  • To review evidence on preventive, psychosocial, and pharmacological approaches.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search of the PubMed database was conducted for studies published between June 2016 and January 2018.
  • 274 articles were identified, with 13 studies meeting the inclusion criteria for assessment.
  • Six systematic reviews and several clinical trials on various interventions were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Promising results were observed for certain preventive, psychosocial (therapist-assisted and computerized), and pharmacological interventions in reducing cannabis use.
  • Recommendations for mitigating adverse health outcomes related to cannabis use were also reviewed.

Conclusions:

  • Existing interventions show potential for reducing cannabis use across different user groups.
  • Further high-quality research is necessary to establish definitive treatment guidelines for cannabis use.
