Background:

  • Multiple mini-interviews (MMI) are increasingly utilized for medical student selection.
  • This study investigates the validity evidence for the Hamburg MMI program.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the predictive validity of the Hamburg MMI.
  • To examine the relationship between MMI scores and emotional intelligence, psychosocial competencies, and clinical performance.

Main Methods:

  • Three follow-up studies were conducted on the 2014 medical school applicant cohort over two years.
  • Spearman's rank correlation was used to analyze MMI results against measures of emotional intelligence (TEIQue-SF, STEM), general practice (GP) evaluations, and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) scores.

Main Results:

  • No significant correlations were found between MMI scores and emotional intelligence measures (TEIQue-SF, STEM).
  • MMI scores significantly predicted GP evaluations of psychosocial competencies (ρ=.32) and suitability for medicine (ρ=.42), as well as OSCE scores (ρ=.23).
  • The MMI remained a significant predictor in a robust regression model controlling for gender and age.

Conclusions:

  • MMIs effectively measure competencies relevant to practical medical contexts.
  • The competencies measured by MMIs do not appear to correlate with emotional intelligence as assessed by self-report or situational judgment tests.
