Elastophagocytosis and Elastolysis in Leprosy.

    Summary

    Elastophagocytosis, the engulfment of elastic fibers, was observed in a lepromatous leprosy case. This finding links elastophagocytosis to specific skin manifestations in infectious diseases.

    Background:

    • Elastophagocytosis is the cellular engulfment of elastic fibers, observed in various cutaneous conditions.
    • It can occur in inflammatory, granulomatous, and infectious dermatoses.

    Observation:

    • A case of lepromatous leprosy with erythema nodosum leprosum and secondary anetoderma is presented.
    • Histopathology of the anetoderma lesion revealed characteristic features.

    Findings:

    • The study identified elastophagocytosis in the atrophic macule of anetoderma.
    • Histological findings included periappendageal and perineural infiltration, along with a reduction in elastic fibers.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights elastophagocytosis as a potential histopathological feature in leprosy-associated anetoderma.
