Erectile dysfunction (ED) patients have significantly lower serum melatonin levels compared to healthy individuals. This finding suggests melatonin may play a role in ED diagnosis and treatment.

Background:

  • Melatonin, a pineal gland hormone, exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Oxidative stress is implicated in the development of erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • Previous experimental models suggest melatonin treatment may benefit ED.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure serum melatonin levels in patients with ED.
  • To investigate the association between ED and serum melatonin levels.

Main Methods:

  • Serum melatonin levels were measured in 62 ED patients (mild, moderate, severe) and 22 healthy controls.
  • Data included anthropometric, biochemical, and hormonal parameters.
  • Patient history covered diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, smoking, and alcohol use.

Main Results:

  • Serum melatonin levels were significantly lower in all ED groups compared to the control group (p=0.019).
  • No significant differences in melatonin levels were observed among the ED severity groups.
  • No significant differences in comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, etc.) were found between ED groups.

Conclusions:

  • ED patients exhibit lower serum melatonin levels than healthy individuals.
  • Further research with larger populations is warranted.
  • Serum melatonin measurement may become a future diagnostic and therapeutic tool for ED.
