ISFM Consensus Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Hypertension in Cats
Insights
This feline medicine guideline amendment corrects the esmolol dosage unit from mg/kg/min to μg/kg/min for continuous rate infusion (CRI). This ensures accurate dosing for critical care in cats.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Feline Critical Care
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Clinical guidelines are essential for standardizing veterinary care.
- Accurate drug dosing is critical for patient safety and treatment efficacy in veterinary medicine.
- Previous versions of feline critical care guidelines contained a dosing error for esmolol.
Purpose of the Study:
- To notify readers of an important amendment to published feline critical care guidelines.
- To correct a specific error in the recommended dosage of esmolol for cats.
- To ensure the online version of the guidelines reflects the accurate therapeutic recommendations.
Main Methods:
- A review of the published guidelines was conducted.
- A specific error in Table 6 concerning the unit for esmolol dosage was identified.
- The online version of the guidelines was updated to reflect the corrected information.
Main Results:
- The unit for esmolol dosage in Table 6 was incorrectly stated as mg/kg/min.
- The corrected unit for esmolol dosage is μg/kg/min.
- The 'Suggested dose' for esmolol has been amended to '50-100 μg/kg/min CRI'.
Conclusions:
- The amendment ensures accurate administration of esmolol in feline critical care.
- Corrected dosing information is now available in the online version of the guidelines.
- This correction enhances the reliability of the feline medicine guidelines for veterinary professionals.
Abstract:
Samantha S Taylor, Andrew H Sparkes, Katherine Briscoe, Jenny Carter, Salva Cervantes Sala, Rosanne E Jepson, Brice S Reynolds and Brian A Scansen J Feline Med Surg 2017; 19: 288-303 Readers should note that the version of the guidelines that appeared in print in March 2017 and online until May 2018 has been amended. The version now appearing online is the correct one. For information, the following amendment has been made to the original published version. In Table 6 on page 299 the unit for esmolol should have been μg/kg/min and not mg/kg/min, as stated. The 'Suggested dose' column entry for esmolol has therefore been amended to '50-100 μg/kg/min CRI'.

Guidelines for Nursing Documentation II
Timely documentation is crucial to ensure continuity of care for patients. Any delays in recording or reporting medical information can result in medical errors and even adverse patient outcomes. From medication administration to diagnostic test results, every detail must be accurately and promptly documented to provide the best possible care for patients.
