Mechanism of Angiogenesis01:10

Mechanism of Angiogenesis

6.9K
Blood vessel formation starts early during embryonic development, around day 7. In the extraembryonic yolk sac, mesodermal precursor cells called hemangioblast proliferate and differentiate into angioblast. Angioblasts express vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 or VEGFR2, which binds VEGF-A, a proangiogenic factor, guiding blood vessel formation. VEGF signaling promotes angioblasts to form a blood island in the developing embryo. Angioblasts further differentiate, giving rise to...

Functional Groups02:45

Functional Groups

89.1K
Functional groups are a group of atoms with characteristic properties, which when linked to the carbon skeleton of a molecule, alter the properties of that molecule. For example, the presence of certain functional groups on a molecule will make them hydrophilic, whereas others will make them hydrophobic. These functional groups are an indispensable part of organic chemistry and important components of biological molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Each...

Regulation of Angiogenesis and Blood Supply01:24

Regulation of Angiogenesis and Blood Supply

3.5K
Rapidly dividing tumors, embryos, and wounded tissues require more oxygen than usual, lowering the oxygen concentration in the blood. At low oxygen or hypoxic conditions, an oxygen-sensitive transcription factor called the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 or HIF1 is activated. HIF1 is a dimeric protein of alpha (ɑ) and beta (β) subunits.  Under optimal oxygen conditions, HIF1β is present in the nucleus while HIF1ɑ remains in the cytosol. HIF1ɑ is hydroxylated by prolyl...

Oxygen Transport in the Blood01:27

Oxygen Transport in the Blood

6.8K
Hemoglobin (Hb) is a crucial molecule in the human body, consisting of four polypeptide chains, each bound to an iron-containing heme group. This unique structure enables hemoglobin to bind to oxygen, with each molecule capable of combining with four molecules of oxygen, leading to rapid and reversible oxygen loading. When fully loaded with oxygen, it is called oxyhemoglobin, while hemoglobin that has released oxygen is called reduced hemoglobin or deoxyhemoglobin. As hemoglobin binds oxygen,...

Oxygen Delivering System II: Venturi Mask and Transtracheal Oxygen01:16

Oxygen Delivering System II: Venturi Mask and Transtracheal Oxygen

2.4K
Oxygen therapy is a pivotal aspect of medical care, particularly for patients with respiratory ailments. Two prominent oxygen-delivering systems include the Venturi mask and the transtracheal oxygen catheter.
Venturi Mask
The Venturi mask, named after the Venturi effect, is designed to deliver precise oxygen concentrations. It consists of a large tube with an oxygen inlet that narrows down, causing a pressure drop that pulls air in through adjustable side ports. The mask is a lightweight,...

Oxygenic Photosynthesis01:26

Oxygenic Photosynthesis

804
Oxygenic photosynthesis is a fundamental process in which light energy is harnessed to drive the oxidation of water, leading to the production of molecular oxygen (O₂), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). This process is essential for sustaining aerobic life on Earth and is primarily carried out by cyanobacteria, algae, and plants. The core of oxygenic photosynthesis lies in the thylakoid membranes, where chlorophyll pigments facilitate...

Summary

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) significantly improved erectile function and penile vascularity in men with chronic erectile dysfunction (ED). This non-surgical treatment promotes penile angiogenesis, reversing underlying causes like atherosclerosis and poor perfusion.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is frequently linked to microvascular or macrovascular insufficiency.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has demonstrated angiogenic potential in various organs.
  • The efficacy of HBOT for non-surgical ED remains largely uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of HBOT on sexual function in men with non-surgical ED.
  • To evaluate changes in the penile vascular bed following HBOT.
  • To explore HBOT as a therapeutic option for ED.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective analysis of 30 men with chronic ED undergoing 40 daily HBOT sessions.
  • Clinical assessment using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Global Efficacy Question (GEQ).
  • Penile vascular bed evaluation via perfusion MRI to measure K-trans values in the corpus cavernosum.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements across all IIEF domains (15-88%, p<0.01), with erectile function improving by 88% (p<0.0001).
  • 80% of patients reported positive outcomes on the GEQ.
  • Perfusion MRI revealed a 153.3% increase in K-trans values (p<0.0001), indicating penile angiogenesis.

Conclusions:

  • HBOT effectively induces penile angiogenesis in men with ED.
  • HBOT improves erectile function by addressing the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and decreased penile perfusion.
  • This therapy offers a promising non-surgical approach for managing ED.
