Background:

  • Many patients do not attend routine follow-up appointments after bariatric surgery (BS).
  • Limited data exists on patient adherence to consultations following sleeve gastrectomy (SG).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of adherence to SG follow-up.
  • To understand reasons for patient attrition from follow-up.
  • To examine the link between follow-up adherence and weight loss results.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study with a 3-year follow-up.
  • Data collected via electronic medical records and telephone questionnaires.
  • Adherence defined numerically (0-9 visits) and dichotomously (adherent/non-adherent).

Main Results:

  • 46.63% of patients were adherent to SG follow-up.
  • Adherent patients used vitamin D more, had fewer rehospitalizations, and consumed fewer sweetened beverages.
  • Older age and side effects predicted adherence; rehospitalizations and minority status predicted non-adherence. No correlation found with weight loss.

Conclusions:

  • Adherence to SG follow-up is associated with positive lifestyle behaviors.
  • No correlation was observed between mid-term follow-up adherence and weight loss outcomes.
