Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Social Proof

Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Background:

In-person social support is well-researched, but online social support requires a validated measurement tool.
Previous theories and measurements of social support provide a foundation for understanding online interactions.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Online Social Support Scale (OSSS).
To determine if subtypes of in-person social support are applicable in the online environment.
To examine the psychometric properties of the OSSS.

Main Methods:

Developed the Online Social Support Scale with four subscales: Esteem/Emotional Support, Social Companionship, Informational Support, and Instrumental Support.
Utilized factor analytic and item response theory in college and community samples.
Assessed reliability, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and construct validity.

Main Results:

Factor analytic and item response theory results confirmed that subtypes of in-person social support are relevant online.
The OSSS demonstrated excellent reliability and validity.
Online social support was associated with different Internet platforms and online victimization.
Online social support buffered negative life events' impact on self-esteem and depression.
Online social support counteracted online victimization effects.

Conclusions:

The Online Social Support Scale is a psychometrically sound measure for assessing online social support.
Online social support functions similarly to in-person support in buffering negative experiences.
Findings support the applicability of established social support theories in the digital realm.
