Summary

Pulmonary alterations after Schistosoma mansoni infection treatment were studied in patients and mice. Results suggest immune complex deposition in lungs, not dependent on parasite presence, causing immunological reactions.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Parasitology
  • Pulmonary Medicine

Background:

  • Schistosoma mansoni infection can cause pulmonary complications.
  • Understanding post-treatment pulmonary changes is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate post-treatment pulmonary alterations in patients and mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.
  • To investigate the immunological mechanisms underlying these alterations.

Main Methods:

  • Study 1: Patients were examined pre- and post-oxamniquine treatment using sputum analysis for eosinophils and chest X-rays.
  • Study 2: Mice were infected with S. mansoni, treated with oxamniquine, and examined using X-rays, optical microscopy, and immunofluorescence.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Abnormalities in pulmonary parameters were observed in both human and mouse studies post-treatment.
  • Experimental data indicated these alterations are independent of the presence of S. mansoni eggs or worms in the lungs.

Conclusions:

  • Post-treatment pulmonary changes are likely due to an immunological reaction, possibly from immune complex deposition in the lungs.
  • Complement system activation is implicated in the observed pulmonary alterations.
