Abdominal CT showed thickened bowel loops; blood cultures grew Escherichia coli.
Autopsy revealed liver cirrhosis, steatosis, and significant thickening of the cecum and ascending colon.

Microscopic examination of the colon demonstrated edema, acute inflammation, and numerous rod-shaped bacilli, consistent with phlegmonous colitis.
