Glaucoma patients frequently use multiple systemic medications. Steroid use was linked to more severe chronic open-angle glaucoma (COAG), but other common drug classes showed no association with glaucoma severity or prevalence.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Pharmacology
- Public Health
Background:
- Glaucoma patients often manage their condition with topical treatments.
- The impact of systemic medication use on glaucoma is not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of systemic medication use in glaucoma patients.
- To determine the relationship between systemic drug classes and the prevalence and severity of chronic open-angle glaucoma (COAG) and primary-angle closure glaucoma (PACG).
Main Methods:
- An observational, prospective, single-center, cross-sectional study.
- Systemic medication lists were collected from 514 glaucoma patients.
- Univariate statistics analyzed the association between medication use and glaucoma type/severity.
Main Results:
- Patients used an average of 4.9 oral medications.
- Commonly used systemic drugs included antihypertensives (49%), anticholinergics (35%), steroids (19%), anticoagulants (42%), and thyroid hormones (21%).
- Steroid use correlated with advanced visual field loss in COAG patients.
Conclusions:
- Glaucoma patients commonly use numerous systemic medications alongside topical glaucoma treatments.
- Systemic steroid use may be associated with increased glaucoma severity, specifically in COAG.
- Antihypertensives and anticholinergic medications were not significantly associated with glaucoma severity or prevalence in this cohort.
