Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

899
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI)01:08

Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI)

1.2K
Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a powerful analytical technique used in mass spectrometry. It enables the identification and characterization of various biomolecules, including proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates. MALDI is an ionization technique, widely employed in biological and medical research, as well as in fields like pharmacology and biochemistry. The analyte of interest, a biomolecule or a mixture of biomolecules, is mixed with a suitable matrix...

Bystander Effect

10.3K
The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Protein Complex Assembly02:41

Protein Complex Assembly

16.8K
Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types.  Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes.
Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...

RNA Splicing01:32

RNA Splicing

60.7K
Splicing is the process by which eukaryotic RNA is edited before its translation into protein. The RNA strand transcribed from eukaryotic DNA is called the primary transcript. The primary transcripts that become mRNAs are called precursor messenger RNAs (pre-mRNAs). Eukaryotic pre-mRNA contains alternating sequences of exons and introns. Exons are nucleotide sequences that code for proteins, whereas introns are the non-coding regions. In RNA splicing, introns are removed and exons are bonded...

Egoism and Altruism

Voluntary behavior with the intent to help other people is called prosocial behavior. Why do people help other people? Is personal benefit such as feeling good about oneself the only reason people help one another?

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures

Background:

  • Uniportal VATS segmentectomy demands advanced anatomical knowledge compared to lobectomy.
  • Anatomic sublobar resection shows comparable outcomes to lobectomy in select Stage IA NSCLC patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To detail clinical experiences and technical aspects of uniportal VATS segmentectomy.
  • To provide practical "tips and tricks" for patient selection, positioning, incisions, and common segmentectomy types.

Main Methods:

  • Description of clinical experiences with uniportal VATS segmentectomy.
  • Inclusion of surgical "tips and tricks" for improved technique.
  • Focus on patient selection, positioning, incisions, and common segmentectomies.

Main Results:

  • Uniportal VATS segmentectomy is technically demanding but safe and feasible.
  • The procedure yields good results in selected patients, as supported by existing literature.
  • Successful implementation requires completion of a training period and learning curve.

Conclusions:

  • Uniportal VATS segmentectomy is a viable alternative to conventional VATS or open thoracotomy for specific patients.
  • Surgeon proficiency and completion of training are crucial for successful outcomes.
  • This technique offers good results when performed by experienced surgeons.
