- Developing efficient methods for functionalizing fluorenes is crucial for creating new materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a highly regioselective method for functionalizing 7-bromofluorene-2-carbaldehydes at the C3 position.
- To synthesize novel, highly functionalized fluorene derivatives and organic phosphorescent dyes.
Main Methods:
- Directed ortho-metallation (DoM) strategy using TMPMgCl·LiCl.
- Reaction of in situ generated metalated species with various electrophiles.
Main Results:
- Successful regioselective functionalization at the C3 position of 7-bromofluorene-2-carbaldehydes.

Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Hydroboration
Hydroboration proceeds in a concerted fashion with the attack of borane on the π bond, giving a cyclic four-centered transition state. The –BH2 group is bonded to the less substituted carbon and –H to the more substituted carbon. The concerted nature requires the simultaneous addition of –H and –BH2 across the same face of the alkene giving syn stereochemistry.
