Summary

This global emergency medicine (EM) course in Rwanda fostered mutual learning between trainees from high-income and low-and-middle-income countries. The program proved to be a sustainable model for international EM education.

Background:

  • Growing demand for short-term global emergency medicine (EM) experiences among medical trainees.
  • EM programs in high-income countries (HICs) facilitate trainee experiences in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs).
  • Opportunity for LMIC EM programs to develop and manage their own global EM courses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Provide HIC EM trainees exposure to global clinical practice and local expertise.
  • Enable LMIC EM trainees to share knowledge and skills with HIC counterparts.
  • Establish a sustainable model for short-term global EM courses within an LMIC context.

Main Methods:

  • Developed and implemented the "EM in the Tropics" (EMIT) course in Rwanda.
  • Curriculum covered EM systems development, public health, trauma, pediatrics, disaster management, and tropical EM.
  • Offered one- and two-week course programs with diverse clinical rotations and activities.

Main Results:

  • Participants rotated through various hospital departments and emergency medical services.
  • Included bedside teaching, case presentations, simulation, skills workshops, and district hospital rotations.
  • Course generated $5000 USD, fully allocated to sponsoring local EM residents for international conferences.

Conclusions:

  • The EMIT course successfully facilitated bidirectional teaching and learning between HIC and LMIC participants.
  • Demonstrated clear clinical, intercultural, and professional benefits for all involved.
  • Proved that LMIC EM programs can successfully host sustainable and mutually beneficial global EM courses.
