Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the intergenerational association of teenage pregnancy between mothers and daughters.
  • To examine if there is a tendency for similar pregnancy outcomes (termination of pregnancy vs. live birth) across generations.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada.
  • Data from 15,097 mothers and 16,177 daughters were analyzed.
  • Generalized estimating equations and multinomial logistic regression were used to assess associations, adjusting for multiple covariates.

Main Results:

  • Daughters of mothers with one, two, or three or more teenage pregnancies had significantly higher odds of experiencing teenage pregnancy (aORs 1.42, 1.97, 2.17, respectively).
  • A strong association was found for daughters having a teenage pregnancy ending in termination of pregnancy (TOP) if their mother also had a TOP (aOR 2.12).
  • Daughters were also more likely to have a live birth if their mother's teenage pregnancy(ies) resulted in live birth(s) (aOR 1.73).

Conclusions:

  • A robust intergenerational association exists for teenage pregnancy between mothers and daughters.
  • There is a notable coupling tendency in the outcomes of teenage pregnancies across generations.
