Social Foundations of Self I: Play and Game

229
The development of self in children is deeply rooted in social interactions, mainly through stages of play and structured games. These stages, outlined by sociologist George Herbert Mead, illustrate how children progressively learn to understand and adopt social roles, forming a cohesive sense of self. The Play Stage: Imitation and Simple Role-TakingIn the early years of childhood, the play stage is characterized by imitative behavior, where children engage in role-playing based on familiar...

The Influence of Affect on Cognition

300
Positive affect significantly influences cognitive processes, including evaluation, memory, creativity, and social judgments. Compared to negative affect, positive emotional states promote more favorable interpretations of stimuli, cognitive flexibility, and heuristic processing. These effects highlight emotions' powerful role in shaping how individuals perceive, remember, and interact with the world.Influence on Evaluation and AttributionWhen individuals experience positive affect, they are...

The Influence of Cognition on Affect

223
Cognition plays a pivotal role in shaping emotional experiences, as demonstrated by Schachter and Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion. According to this model, emotion arises from a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation. The body’s physiological response to stimuli is ambiguous and only gains emotional significance through cognitive labeling. For instance, an increased heart rate and adrenaline surge while standing near an attractive person may be...

Bioavailability: Influencing Factors

401
Bioavailability refers to the extent and rate at which a drug reaches systemic circulation in its active form. Extent refers to the amount of the drug that makes it into circulation, while rate is the speed at which it enters circulation. It is influenced by several factors critical for optimizing drug formulations, dosing regimens, and therapeutic outcomes.Physicochemical properties of drugs and formulationsThe solubility, stability, and dissolution rate of a drug significantly impact its...

Biological Influences on Intelligence

558
Intelligence is often thought to be linked to brain size, but the relationship is more complex than that. While brain size does correlate modestly with some abilities, like verbal skills, the connection is weaker for others, such as spatial reasoning. Other factors, like brain structure, also play crucial roles. For instance, despite Einstein's smaller-than-average brain, his parietal cortex, which is involved in spatial reasoning, was 15% wider, suggesting that neural density might matter...

Environmental Influences on Intelligence

950
Despite the strong genetic influence on traits like intelligence, environmental factors significantly shape outcomes. For example, while over 90% of height variation is due to genetic differences, environmental factors such as nutrition also have a notable impact. Similarly, for intelligence, changes in a child's surroundings can significantly alter their IQ. Research shows that enriched environments boost children's academic success and help them develop key cognitive skills. Children...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Game Studies

Background:

  • A known association exists between substance use and excessive online gaming.
  • Previous research has not investigated online gaming under the influence of various drugs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the experiences and motives of Czech online gamers using licit and illicit drugs while playing massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs).

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 3,952 Czech online gamers was conducted.
  • Data collected on substance use (caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs) and gaming habits.

Main Results:

  • Illicit drug use during online gaming was found to be of low prevalence.
  • Substance use positively correlated with gaming intensity, engagement, and addiction.
  • Stimulant psychoactive substances linked to higher engagement; sedatives linked to higher addiction scores.
  • Gaming genre preference showed slight variations in substance use patterns.

Conclusions:

  • Drug use while gaming is often unrelated to the game itself, primarily involving common substances like caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis.
  • A subset of gamers reported using drugs for cognitive enhancement and to improve gaming performance.
