Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of hand curettes, piezoelectric ultrasonic scalers, and a combined technique on dental root surface morphology and roughness.
  • To evaluate the impact of different periodontal scaling methods on root surface integrity in vitro.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-four monoradicular teeth were divided into four groups: two ultrasonic scaler groups (Piezon®, PiezoSmart®), one hand curette group (Gracey 7/8), and one combined group.
  • Surface roughness was analyzed using white light interferometry.
  • Morphological changes were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Main Results:

  • Hand curette scaling (Group C) resulted in the highest surface roughness (Sa = 24.98 μm).
  • Ultrasonic devices (Groups A and P) produced the lowest roughness values (Sa = 8.99 μm and 4.45 μm, respectively).
  • SEM confirmed significant surface alterations with hand curettes compared to ultrasonic devices.

Conclusions:

  • All tested periodontal devices caused some degree of surface alteration.
  • Hand curettes have a greater impact on dental root surface integrity than piezoelectric ultrasonic devices.
  • Ultrasonic devices are preferable for minimizing surface roughness during periodontal scaling.
