Modified Boxplots

11.2K
A standard box and whisker plot informs us about the spread of the data in a given sample. One can identify the minimum value, maximum value, first quartile value, second quartile or median value, and third quartile.
However, the box plot does not tell the reader about outliers - values that lie far from the center of the data. We can modify the standard box and whisker plot to identify the outliers and visualize the actual spread of the data in a sample.
Initially, we calculate the adjusted...

Functional Groups02:45

Functional Groups

89.1K
Functional groups are a group of atoms with characteristic properties, which when linked to the carbon skeleton of a molecule, alter the properties of that molecule. For example, the presence of certain functional groups on a molecule will make them hydrophilic, whereas others will make them hydrophobic. These functional groups are an indispensable part of organic chemistry and important components of biological molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Each...

Antiasthma Drugs: Leukotriene Modifiers

1.9K
Leukotriene modifiers, or cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonists, are medications used to manage chronic asthma. These agents target specific inflammatory mediators produced during arachidonic acid metabolism, an essential process in generating inflammation in the body.
Leukotriene modifiers work through two distinct mechanisms:

Functionalism

2.7K
William James, John Dewey, and Charles Sanders Peirce were instrumental in founding functional psychology, which draws heavily from Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. This theory suggests that individual traits, including behaviors, are adapted to their environments through natural selection. At the heart of functionalism is the concept of adaptation, meaning that a trait enhances an individual's chances of survival and reproduction.
James envisioned psychology's...

Mechanical Protein Functions01:58

Mechanical Protein Functions

5.7K
Proteins perform many mechanical functions in a cell. These proteins can be classified into two general categories- proteins that generate mechanical forces and proteins that are subjected to mechanical forces. Proteins providing mechanical support to the structure of the cell, such as keratin, are subjected to mechanical force, whereas proteins involved in cell movement and transport of molecules across cell membranes, such as an ion pump, are examples of generating mechanical force.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Parotid gland tumors are common.
  • Surgical approaches for parotidectomy aim to balance tumor removal with aesthetic outcomes.
  • Traditional incisions can lead to visible scarring and complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and aesthetic outcomes of a modified periauricular incision in parotid surgical procedures.
  • To assess the incidence of complications associated with this surgical approach.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen patients underwent partial superficial parotidectomies using a modified periauricular incision.
  • Clinical assessments included cosmetic satisfaction, facial nerve function, earlobe sensation, and salivary fistula.
  • Follow-up ranged from 6 to 30 months.

Main Results:

  • All parotid tumors were successfully removed with excellent aesthetic results (average cosmetic satisfaction: 9.2/10).
  • Temporary facial nerve palsy occurred in 2 patients; earlobe numbness in 6. All recovered within 1-3 months.
  • No cases of salivary fistula or Frey's syndrome were observed. No recurrence during follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • The modified periauricular incision is a safe and highly aesthetic option for parotid gland surgery.
  • It provides a high-quality cosmetic outcome while effectively managing benign parotid conditions.
  • This technique minimizes the risk of significant complications such as Frey's syndrome.
