Introduction To Health Care Delivery System01:18

Introduction To Health Care Delivery System

4.2K
The healthcare system is constantly changing and complex. Various services are available from different healthcare providers, but gaining access to these services has become challenging for people with limited healthcare insurance. Uninsured people present a challenge to healthcare because they frequently postpone or forego treatment.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) advocates for a patient-centered, effective, safe, timely, equitable, and effective healthcare system. The National Priorities...

Integration of Synaptic Events01:28

Integration of Synaptic Events

4.2K
Synaptic integration mainly includes the summation of graded potentials. Graded potentials, regardless of their type, cause subtle alterations in membrane voltage, resulting in either depolarization or hyperpolarization. These incremental changes, when combined or summed, can propel the neuron toward its threshold. Consider, for example, a membrane experiencing a +15 mV shift, causing it to depolarize from -70 mV to -55 mV. In this scenario, graded potentials govern the membrane's ability to...

Traditional Level Of Health Care System

3.4K
The levels of care describe the services provided in the healthcare system. Accordingly, there are six levels of the traditional healthcare system in the US: preventive, primary, secondary, tertiary, restorative, and continuing healthcare. A nurse must understand how the healthcare industry organizes and provides services within these levels of care.
The preventive healthcare service includes tests for screening. Preventive health care services include identifying and reducing disease risk...

Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

3.1K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Opioid-related adverse drug events (ORADEs) are common in hospitalized patients undergoing procedures, leading to worse outcomes. Addressing ORADEs is crucial for improving patient safety and reducing healthcare costs.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Patient Safety
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Opioids are frequently used for pain management during and after invasive procedures.
  • Opioid-related adverse drug events (ORADEs) are prevalent and linked to adverse patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of ORADEs in patients undergoing hospital-based surgical and endoscopic procedures.
  • To evaluate the association between ORADEs and clinical and financial outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of clinical and administrative data from 21 acute care hospitals.
  • Identification of ORADEs using ICD-9 codes or opioid antagonist use.
  • Multivariable regression analysis to assess the association of ORADEs with outcomes in 135,379 adult patients (2013-2015).

Main Results:

  • 10.6% of patients experienced at least one ORADE.
  • ORADEs were associated with increased inpatient mortality (OR, 28.8), discharge to another facility (OR, 2.9), prolonged length of stay (OR, 3.1), higher hospitalization costs (OR, 2.7), and 30-day readmission (OR, 1.3).
  • ORADEs led to a 2.9% absolute increase in mortality, $8225 higher costs, and 1.6-day longer stays.

Conclusions:

  • Opioid-related adverse drug events are common in patients undergoing invasive procedures.
  • ORADEs are significantly associated with poorer clinical and economic outcomes.
  • Reducing hospital-acquired ORADEs presents a key opportunity for health systems to enhance patient safety and decrease costs.
