Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the distributions and correlations of the generic Work Limitations Questionnaire (WLQ-26) and firefighting-specific performance tests.
  • To evaluate the utility of the WLQ-26 in assessing firefighter work limitations.

Main Methods:

  • 293 active firefighters completed the WLQ-26 assessing five work domains.
  • 149 firefighters underwent performance-based tests: hose drag and stair climb with a high-rise pack.
  • Descriptive statistics and correlations were used to analyze data.

Main Results:

  • The WLQ-26 exhibited significant ceiling effects, with 44.0-55.6% of firefighters in the highest category.
  • Performance-based tests showed a wider score range and lacked ceiling effects.
  • No significant correlations were found between self-reported work limitations (WLQ-26) and actual task performance.

Conclusions:

  • The WLQ-26 is not sensitive enough to detect work limitations in firefighters due to ceiling effects.
  • Performance-based tests offer a more sensitive measure of firefighter capabilities.
  • A firefighter-specific self-report scale is recommended for accurately identifying compromised work role capabilities.
