Summary

Moderate egg consumption (4-7 times weekly) is linked to a lower risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adults. However, eating two or more eggs daily showed no association with reduced MetS risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing literature on egg consumption and metabolic diseases.
  • To investigate the association between high egg intake and MetS in Korean adults.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of PubMed and EMBASE databases up to December 2017.
  • Analysis of data from 23,993 Korean adults (aged 19+).
  • MetS diagnosis based on Adult Treatment Panel III criteria.

Main Results:

  • Consuming eggs 4-6 times/week or 1 time/day was associated with a reduced prevalence of MetS (OR=0.82 and OR=0.83, respectively).
  • Daily intake of one egg decreased abdominal obesity prevalence.
  • Weekly intake of 2-7 eggs helped maintain high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
  • Consuming two or more eggs daily was not associated with a lower MetS risk.

Conclusions:

  • Moderate egg consumption (4-7 times weekly) correlates with a lower prevalence of MetS.
  • High daily egg intake (≥2 eggs/day) does not appear to reduce MetS risk.
  • Specific consumption patterns may influence components of MetS, such as abdominal obesity and HDL cholesterol.
