Observation:

  • A psychiatric consultation revealed drug dependence in 30% of IBD patients.
  • Oral narcotics were the most common form of drug dependence observed.

Findings:

  • Drug dependence was more prevalent in Crohn's disease patients compared to ulcerative colitis patients.
  • A notable proportion of dependent patients also had borderline personality disorder.
  • Underrecognition of drug dependence in IBD is a significant issue.

Implications:

  • Patients with specific psychiatric disorders may be at increased risk for drug dependence.
  • Involving family members can aid in recognizing drug dependence.
  • Effective prevention strategies include addressing pain at its source and centralizing narcotic prescription management under a single physician.
