Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) infection stimulates endothelial cells (EC) to produce interleukin-11 (IL-11), a cytokine previously unreported to be induced by any biological agent. This study details the dynamics of IL-11 production in EC following hCMV infection.
Area of Science:
- Virology
- Immunology
- Cell Biology
Background:
- Endothelial cells (EC) are key targets for human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) infection in the body.
- hCMV infection can trigger ECs to release cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6), influencing cellular functions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the induction of interleukin-11 (IL-11) production by hCMV in ECs.
- To compare the dynamics of IL-11 and IL-6 production in response to hCMV infection.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of temporal translation and protein secretion of IL-11 in hCMV-infected ECs.
- Comparison of IL-11 and IL-6 regulatory mechanisms during hCMV infection.
Main Results:
- hCMV infection induces IL-11 production in ECs, a novel finding.
- Distinct temporal dynamics were observed for IL-11 and IL-6 production.
- Viral replication significantly promoted IL-11 production while suppressing IL-6 expression.
Conclusions:
- hCMV infection is the first reported biological agent to stimulate IL-11 production in ECs.
- Differential regulation of IL-11 and IL-6 by hCMV highlights complex viral-host interactions.
