Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Pyrosis evaluation in an elderly male revealed gastric polyps.
  • Endoscopic and histologic examination were performed over a 2-year period.

Observation:

  • Multiple polyps in the stomach fundus and body were identified.
  • Histology showed fundic gland hyperplasia and hyperplastic polyps.
  • These polyps contained nests of immature squamous cells within superficial gastric glands.

Findings:

  • The immature squamous cells resembled squamous morules found in benign endometrium.
  • This specific type of squamous epithelium in gastric mucosa is not previously reported.
  • The process is considered benign with no evidence linking it to gastric carcinomas.

Implications:

  • This finding expands the understanding of gastric mucosal pathology.
  • It highlights a rare, benign entity that can mimic neoplastic changes.
  • Further research may clarify the origin and behavior of these squamous nests.
