    Summary

Computed tomography (CT) effectively identifies glucagonoma syndrome by detecting large pancreatic tumors and hepatic metastases. CT is crucial for diagnosing and staging these rare neuroendocrine tumors.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Radiology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Glucagonoma syndrome presents with characteristic rash, diabetes mellitus, and weight loss.
    • Early diagnosis of glucagonomas is challenging due to their size at presentation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of computed tomography (CT) in diagnosing and staging glucagonoma syndrome.
    • To characterize the imaging features of glucagonomas using CT.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven patients with glucagonoma syndrome underwent CT examination.
    • Tumor size, location, calcification, vascularity, and metastatic spread were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • CT identified primary pancreatic tumors in all seven patients.
    • Hepatic metastases were detected in four patients.
    • Primary tumors were large (2.5-6 cm), solid, hypervascular, and occasionally calcified.

    Conclusions:

    • CT is a valuable tool for identifying, localizing, and staging glucagonomas.
    • Glucagonomas are significantly larger at diagnosis compared to insulinomas.
    • CT should be the primary imaging modality for glucagonoma syndrome.
