    Background:

    • Junin virus (JUNV) causes Argentine hemorrhagic fever, a severe disease with high mortality.
    • Development of safe and effective vaccines against JUNV is crucial for public health.
    • Attenuated viral strains are often explored as vaccine candidates.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the attenuated JUNV XJC13 strain in marmosets.
    • To assess the protective efficacy of XJC13 against challenge with a pathogenic JUNV strain.
    • To investigate viral persistence and host response following inoculation with XJC13.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty marmosets were inoculated with the attenuated XJC13 strain (n=15) or served as controls (n=5).
    • Animals were monitored for 420 days, with virologic, hematologic, serologic, and histologic assessments.

    • XJC13 infection induces a protective immune response against virulent JUNV challenge.
    • This attenuated strain represents a promising candidate for a Junin virus vaccine.
