    Summary

    Children with cancer often show reduced splenic function, indicated by elevated pitted red blood cell (pocked RBC) counts. This splenic hypofunction may increase infection risk in pediatric cancer patients.

    Background:

    • Splenic function is crucial for clearing opsonized bacteria.
    • Impaired splenic function, or hyposplenism, increases susceptibility to severe infections.
    • Pitted erythrocytes (pocked RBCs) are a quantitative measure of splenic reticuloendothelial function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess splenic function in children with cancer using the pocked RBC count.
    • To determine the prevalence of splenic hypofunction in pediatric cancer patients.
    • To investigate the relationship between pocked RBC counts and specific cancer types or treatments.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantification of pitted erythrocytes (pocked RBC count) using phase interference microscopy.
    • Analysis of pocked RBC counts in normal children/adults, post-splenectomy children, and children with cancer.

    • Splenic reticuloendothelial hypofunction in pediatric cancer patients may contribute to infection risk.
